- Eight of the 14 cases of polio by KP.
- Over 17,000 vaccinated in Bannu Drive.
- Large -scale KP campaign scheduled for August.
ISLAMABAD: The Regional Reference Laboratory for the Elimination of Polio Liturgy at the National Institute of Health (NIH) confirmed a new case of polio in northern Waziristan, pressing Pakistan’s national counting at 14 for 2025.
The latter case includes a 19-month-old boy from the Miranshah-3 Union Council in the North Waziristan area, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
This marks the eighth case only from KP this year, with the rest of the cases mentioned by Sindh (4), Punjab (1) and Gilgit-Baltistan (1).
Polio is an extremely contagious, incurable disease that can lead to permanent paralysis. Repeated doses of the oral polio vaccine (OPV) during each campaign, along with the completion of all basic immune effects, remain the only effective assurance for children under five years.
Although vaccination throughout the country continues to improve scope and quality, the southern areas of KP remain a persistent challenge.
Limited access and difficulties in performing home vaccination campaigns have led to thousands of missing doses and remain exposed to polio.
In response, targeted efforts are in progress. From June 23 to 28, a special vaccination campaign in six Bannu union councils provided OPV to 17,485 children. A similar move is scheduled for 11 trade union councils in northern Waziristan.
In addition, preparations are underway for a large -scale vaccination campaign across the south KP in August.
Employees warn that the emergence of new cases in the area highlights the urgent need to reach every child. While workers at the forefront are making door -to -door efforts, parents’ participation is vital. Each lost dose represents a risk – and every dose administered brings to the country a step closer to the elimination of the disease.
