- “If funding disappears, people are going to die.”
President Donald Trump’s decision to suspend their overseas funding could lead to millions of deaths by AIDS, the UN chief of the illness he warned on Sunday.
The United States is the largest provider of official development aid in the world, with most of the funds being directed through the United States International Development Service (USAID).
Trump ordered most of the US external aid to be frozen for three months upon returning to the office in January, letting world humanists mix to deal with the phenomenon.
“It’s dramatic in many countries,” said UNAIDS executive Winnie Byanyima at AFP.
“I have to hear the alarm so that it is very clear that this is a large part (of funding AIDS relief). If it goes away, people are going to die.”
The US movement included 90 days suspended all work from the President’s Emergency Plan for the relief of AIDS (Pepfar), although his administration later issued exemptions for medication under the program.
Increase of death ‘ten times’
This program supports more than 20 million HIV patients and 270,000 health workers, according to an AIDS Research (AMFAR) analysis.
“We could see additional deaths rise by ten times” to 6.3 million in five years, Byanyima said, reporting UNAIDS estimates.
“Or we could see new infections rising up to 8.7 million” in the same period, he said.
The United States has said that “Sotiriou therapies” will be free from freezing-even if workers in the front line in Africa say facilities have already been closed.
Speaking on the sidelines of the African Union Summit in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, Byanyima said it had discussed the issue with leaders, urging them to move from foreign funding to use domestic revenue.
However, he noted that many African nations were delayed with huge debts – some in “more than 50 % of their revenue collections” – which ruled out their ability to start linking the potential deficit.
“Part of the answer is to push very hard for an immediate and integrated debt restructuring,” he said.
“For many of them, debt fills what could be spent on health and education.”
Founded in 1961, USAID has an annual budget of over $ 40 billion, which is used to support growth, health and humanitarian programs around the world, especially in poor countries.
