Looters strip Sudanese museums of priceless antiquities

Ancient sculptures are displayed at Sudan’s national museum in Khartoum June 25, 2008. — AFP PORT SUDAN: Sudan’s priceless archaeological heritage is being stripped from museums, with looters loading statuettes and fragments of ancient palaces onto trucks, smuggling them out of the war-torn country and selling them online. More than a year of war between rival generals has killed tens of thousands of people, forced millions more from their homes and left the country’s precious antiquities at the mercy of bandits. On Thursday, Unesco, the United Nations’ cultural body, said “the threat to culture appears to have reached an unprecedented

At least 61 killed in 48 hours as Israeli airstrikes continue on Gaza Strip

GAZA CITY: Over the past 48 hours, Israeli airstrikes across the Gaza Strip have killed at least 61 people, according to Palestinian medical sources, as Israeli forces clashed with Hamas militants. Despite 11 months of ongoing conflict, several diplomatic efforts have yet to result in a ceasefire or secure the release of Israeli and foreign hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. Among the targets of the Israeli airstrikes were two former schools in Gaza City and Jabalia, which housed displaced persons. These strikes reportedly claimed the lives of at least 12 people. The Israeli military said these strikes targeted Hamas

UN experts say widespread famine has gripped the Gaza Strip

GENEVA: The recent deaths of more Palestinian children due to hunger and malnutrition show that famine has spread across the Gaza Strip, a UN-backed panel of independent experts said on Tuesday. Experts said 34 Palestinians have died of malnutrition since last October 7 – when Israel’s offensive on Gaza began – most of them children. The death of a child from malnutrition and dehydration indicates that health and social structures have been attacked and severely weakened, experts said in a statement. “When the first child dies of malnutrition and dehydration, it is indisputable that famine has taken hold,” they said.

Gaza Strip

JAMBALIYA, GAZA STRIP: Explosions, airstrikes and gunfire hit northern Gaza on Saturday, the third day of an Israeli military operation that has uprooted tens of thousands of Palestinians and worsened what the UN called “unbearable” living conditions in the area. An AFP correspondent reported explosions from the Shujaya area near Gaza City, and a resident said bodies were seen in the streets. The armed wings of both Hamas and Islamic Jihad said they were engaged in ongoing fighting with Israeli forces there. The Israeli military, meanwhile, said its operations were continuing in Sujaya, where fighting “above and below the ground”

Israel kills dozens in airstrikes in Gaza Strip

CAIRO: Israel continued its air and ground bombardment of the Gaza Strip on Friday, killing dozens of Palestinians as fighting raged around Gaza City’s main Al Shifa hospital, Palestinian officials and the Israeli military said. Palestinian health officials said two Israeli raids on the Al-Shejaia suburb in eastern Gaza City killed 17 people, while an Israeli airstrike on a house in the Al-Maghazi refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip killed eight people. The Hamas-run Gaza government media office said at least 10 police officers, tasked with helping displaced people in northern Gaza, were among the dead in Al-Shejaia. The

Israel kills over 100 people in attacks on Gaza Strip

GAZA CITY/RAMALA: More than 100 Palestinians were killed and many others wounded in overnight Israeli air and ground attacks in various parts of the Gaza Strip, the official Palestinian news agency Wafa reported Sunday, as Israel’s war in the besieged Palestinian enclave entered its 100th day. “The bodies of 50 civilians were recovered from the rubble after the shelling of a three-story residential building in the densely populated Al-Daraj neighborhood in the heart of Gaza City,” the news agency said. “The building housed families of Al-Shobaki, Al-Zoukh, Hassouna and Al-Qasim,” he added. The majority of the dead and injured were
