Consumers paying too much for electricity: NTDC

Islamabad: Officials of the National Transmission and Dispatch Corporation (NTDC) made a shocking revelation on Wednesday that consumers were paying 40,000 megawatts (MW) of power despite consuming less electricity. “Consumers use 12,000-13,000 MW of electricity but have to pay for 40,000 MW of power,” NTDC officials said during the National Electricity Regulatory Authority (Nepra) public hearing in the federal capital. Consumers are set to get a nominal reduction in electricity rates of up to 31 paisa per unit due to fuel adjustment for the month of July 2024. The Central Power Purchase Authority (CPPA) had asked for a reduction in

NTDC’s investment plan was described as unrealistic

Islamabad: The National Electricity Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has raised serious questions over an investment plan submitted by the National Transmission and Dispatch Corporation (NTDC) as it appears “unrealistic” to address system constraints that have led to power outages in several times across the country. The power sector regulator pointed out that the blackout problem was mainly experienced in the southern parts of the country involving transmission lines, so investments should be planned and carried out in areas where there were restrictions on the system. However, the plan lacked investment proposals for the south. In a public hearing on Wednesday, the

Development spending remains a low priority

Islamabad: The federal government spent only Rs 76 billion on development projects in the first four months of this fiscal year, equivalent to a quarter of the funds approved by the Ministry of Planning. Development expenditure remained at Rs 76 billion, against the authorization of Rs 301 billion under the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP) 2023-24, the Ministry of Planning said on Wednesday. The significant gap between approval and actual spending highlights challenges in the process of releasing funds, the slow progress of programs and the ability to spend allocated funds. The deliberate slowdown in development spending aims to offset
