The study finds more microplastics in glass bottles than plastic

PARIS: Drinks including water, soda, beer and wine sold in glass bottles contain more small toddlers than in plastic bottles, according to a stunning study published by the Food Security Service on Friday. Researchers have identified the tiny, mostly invisible pieces of plastic around the world, from the air we breathe in the food we eat, as well as full of human bodies. There is still no immediate evidence that this supremacy of plastic is harmful to human health, but a growing sector of research aims to measure its spread. UK mosques on alert over far-right protests

British Muslims have expressed fear of far-right protests targeting mosques in the UK in recent days as community leaders beefed up security at Islamic centers ahead of more protests planned for Saturday. Rioters have targeted Islamic places of worship since unfounded rumors spread online that the teenage suspect in a knife attack that killed three girls in northwest England on Monday was Muslim. Protesters threw bricks at a mosque on Tuesday night in Southport, the town where 17-year-old Axel Rudakubana is accused of carrying out the mass stabbing, in riots blamed on the far-right English Defense League. Then on Friday

Deadly attack on Shiite mosque carried out by Omani nationals, police say

DUBAI: The three gunmen who shot and killed six people at a Shiite mosque in Oman in an attack claimed by Da’ish this week were all Omani nationals, police said on Thursday. The Royal Oman Police said the three gunmen were brothers and “were killed because of their persistence in resisting security personnel”. Fear and triumph as row over mosque in India’s holiest city intensifies

As Hindus began prayers at a mosque in one of India’s holiest cities, the building’s elderly caretaker Syed Mohammad Yasin wondered how much longer he would be allowed to worship there. Varanasi, where Hindus travel to cremate their dead by the Ganges River, is the latest flashpoint in an ongoing battle to claim centuries-old Islamic monuments for the country’s majority faith. The campaigns have found an ideological patron in Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who last month inaugurated a grand new temple on the site of a mosque demolished by Hindu zealots decades earlier. “We are witnessing repression and cruelty,” said

Centuries-old mosque demolished in Indian capital

NEW DELHI: Bulldozers tore down a centuries-old mosque in India’s capital, a member of the building’s management committee said Thursday, during a demolition operation to remove “illegal” structures from a forest reserve. The demolition comes at a sensitive time in India, with nationalist activists emboldened in their long campaign to replace many prominent mosques with Hindu temples. Masjid Akhonji in New Delhi, which its caretakers say is about 600 years old, was home to 22 students enrolled in an Islamic boarding school. It was demolished on Tuesday in a forest in Mehrauli, an affluent neighborhood dotted with centuries-old ruins of

Indian court allows Hindus to pray inside disputed mosque

An Indian court heard one of the country’s most sensitive religious disputes on Wednesday, allowing Hindu worshipers to pray inside a mosque in the city of Varanasi. The Gyanvapi mosque is one of several Islamic houses of worship that Hindu activists, backed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party, have been trying for decades to reclaim their religion. It was built in the 17th century by the Mughal Empire in a city where devout Hindus from across the country cremate their loved ones in the Ganges River. The court in Varanasi ruled that Hindu worshipers – who believe the mosque replaced

Hindu group hardens stance on India’s mosque-temple disputes

NEW DELHI: A powerful Hindu group said many mosques in India were built over demolished Hindu temples, apparently hardening its stance on a decades-old religious dispute, days after a massive temple was inaugurated on the site of a demolished mosque. The comments from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological parent of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist party, come after Modi and the RSS chief consecrated a temple on Monday at the site of a 16th-century mosque demolished by a Hindu. mob in 1992. The fight over claims to holy sites has divided the Hindu majority, which has the
