Fiscal gap: a real elephant in the room

Islamabad: According to the federal budget announcement 2024-2025, Pakistan will have to finance a fiscal deficit of Rs 8,500 billion. This is such an important and shocking element, yet no one recognizes its true impact. We’re told it’s 8% of GDP, but nobody’s telling us it’s actually 45% of the total budget for 2024-25. To add some spice to it, a total of Rs 7,800 billion will be financed through domestic financing, for which the borrowing rate is around 20%. So the actual number would be even higher. For reference, net federal receipts for 2024-25 will be Rs 10.377 billion.
