Kites battle drones as farmers face police at protests in India

AMBALA, INDIA: Farmers protesting in India this week are using a makeshift arsenal to counter the state-of-the-art weaponry of security forces trying to disperse them: flying kites to trap police drones carrying tear gas. Over the past two days, thousands of farmers have clashed with security forces about 200km north of Delhi after police stopped their ‘Delhi Chalo’ or ‘Let’s Go to Delhi’ march towards the capital to demand the government provide higher prices for their crops. On Thursday, representatives of farmers’ unions met with government officials in an attempt to find a solution. Farmers had brought their tractors and

Indian police block roads to stop farmers marching on New Delhi

NEW DELHI: Indian police blocked roads on Monday to stop farmers marching on New Delhi to push for better crop prices promised in 2021, as thousands of farmers camped out on major highways leading to the country’s capital. Some government ministers are expected to meet farm union leaders on Monday to avoid a repeat of the year-long protest, which aimed to force the government to scrap farm laws aimed at deregulating huge farm markets. The march comes just months before India’s national elections, in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is widely expected to win a third term. India’s millions of

Farmers expect imported urea

Islamabad: The failure of the service administration to finalize a mechanism to deliver urea to farmers leads to a multi-billion rupee scandal, resulting in looting of money from fertilizer dealers. Already, the government has imported 220,000 tonnes of urea at a cost of nearly Rs 30 billion, which was sent to National Fertilizer Marketing Limited (NFML) warehouses on December 25 last year. However, the imported urea is yet to reach the farmers, who were supposed to receive supplies to plant the current wheat crop. Now, the food security ministry is expecting the delivery of imported urea to farmers either by

Farmers denied urea subsidy benefit

Islamabad: The cabinet has expressed serious concerns over the alleged alienation of farmers by fertilizer manufacturers, despite heavy subsidy on gas supply. According to sources, the cabinet in a recent meeting noted that high subsidy is given to fertilizer companies, but its impact is not passed on to farmers, who are forced to buy fertilizers at very high prices. It was reported that there were other factors affecting fertilizer prices, such as provincial price control, curbing smuggling and the use of tax measures. It was suggested that the issue of urea supply and prices be taken up in a separate

Urea shortage is hitting farmers hard
