At least six people fell into the Patapsco River after a bridge collapsed into the water in Baltimore, presumed dead as rescue efforts were halted 18 hours after the incident. Reuters mentionted,
In the wake of the collapse, officials from the US Coast Guard and Maryland State Police offered a bleak assessment, indicating a slim chance of finding the other six missing between the freeze and the passing of time with a higher degree of likelihood.
The incident occurred very early on when the Singapore-flagged Dali container collided with one of the supporting pillars of the Frances Scott Key Bridge.
Rescuers managed to save two survivors, one of whom was taken to hospital. However, an intense search and rescue operation had to be called off about 18 hours after the disaster.
The work crew, responsible for the maintenance of the bridge, faced the unexpected collapse of the bridge while they were on the brink of their repairs.
Authorities praised the timely interventions to stop traffic after the boat was reported to have lost power, thus saving further casualties.
“By being able to stop cars from coming over the bridge, these people are heroes. They saved lives last night,” Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said at a news briefing hours later. The bridge was up to code and there were no known structural issues, Moore said.
Governor Moore noted that the bridge was compliant with safety standards to avoid any doubt about the potential for criminal activity or structural issues.
During the days of the search mission, the main objective is to find the missing and to offer their family members the required support in the difficult time after the horrific accident.
