Shehbaz, Bilawal call for judicial commission on Murree deaths

ISLAMABAD: Leader of the Opposition, Mian Shehbaz Sharif and PPP Chairman, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari have called for a judicial probe on the Murree incident in which at least 23 Pakistanis lost their lives after remaining stuck in snow for over 20 hours.

In the Parliamentary session, it was decided between the government and the opposition that discussion regarding the Finance Supplementary Bill also known as ‘Mini Budget’ would be held tomorrow and that the focus of today’s session would be on the Murree Incident.

Shehbaz Sharif lashed at the government for failing to avert the tragic incident, questioning whether it was a disaster or manslaughter.

“There was no one to aid the stuck people in Murree, now we have held a collective prayer for the victims of the incident that included children and the elderly. No one helped them for 20 hours,” Mian Shehbaz Sharif said.

The Leader of the Opposition compared Prime Minister Imran Khan and Chief Minister Punjab to Roman emperor Nero who is severely criticised for his role in the Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD.

The reality is that there were no arrangements in place,” Shehbaz said.

“This criminal act of negligence and inefficiency and cannot be pardoned. When the Met Office had warned of excessive snowfall, what measures did the government take?” he asked.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari reiterated Shehbaz Sharif’s demand for a judicial commission lamenting the government for not helping the women and children who were merely two hours away from the federal capital.

Bilawal reminded ex PPP politician Fawad Chaudhry of his tweet boasting of tourism in Murree days before the unfortunate incident.

He also mentioned how Fawad Chaudhry indulged in victim-blaming after the incident.

Fawad Chaudhry started his speech criticising Shehbaz Sharif saying that the Leader of the Opposition was a “show off” and did not speak like a leader.

“He (Shehbaz Sharif) is here after taking an exemption from the court. I thought he would speak like a leader but he has once again proven that he is an ordinary show-off who has nothing to say,” Chaudhry said.

Instead of focusing on the Murree incident, Fawad Chaudhry said that the Sharif family had created palaces using state funds.

Prime Minister Imran Khan remained absent from the parliamentary session.
