KARACHI: Senior Health Journalist Waqar Bhatti, associated with The News International and Geo Newswas awarded the 1st National Health Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to health journalism, public health awareness and disease prevention advocacy in Pakistan.
The award was presented during the annual dinner of the 22nd Health Asia International Exhibition and Conference held in Karachi.
Federal Minister for National Health, Regulation and Coordination Syed Mustafa Kamal presented the award to Bhatti, along with distinguished public health expert Prof Zulfiqar Bhutta, Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) CEO Dr Obaidullah and its Vice-Chancellor Health Services Academy (HSA) Professor Shahzad Ali Khan.

His work has consistently highlighted critical public health issues such as polio eradication, antimicrobial resistance, maternal and child health, and the growing burden of noncommunicable diseases.
Through his research stories and advocacy, he has been instrumental in advancing preventive health care and raising public awareness of health policy reforms and disease prevention.
Congratulating him and other recipients, Federal Health Minister Kamal praised their dedication to improving public health communication in Pakistan, saying their work bridged the gap between policy makers, health professionals and the public.
The National Health Awards, established this year at Health Asia 2025, aim to recognize excellence and commitment in Pakistan’s health sector.
