ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani State Bank (SBP) briefed the Committee on Standing Committee on Tuesday on the funding that the country’s GDP growth rate may remain lower than the officially projected 4.2% target for current use.
The permanent committee on finance and revenue of the National Assembly held its meeting under the chair of Syed Naveed Qamar at House Parliament on Tuesday. SBP employees informed the Commission that GDP growth could reach 3.2% for FY26, compared to 4.2%.
State Bank Deputy Governor Dr. Inayat Hussain told the Commission that the Central Bank had foreseen foreign exchange reserves to reach $ 15.5 billion by December and $ 17.5 billion by June.
He warned that any artificial assessment of rupee would increase the introduction bill and further stocks. He added that the current value of rupee against the dollar is at the “right level” – neither overpriced nor underestimated.
PTI MNA USAMA Mela noted that only in July, the government bought $ 720 million from the market. Dr. Inayat confirmed that the central bank bought $ 7.8 billion from the open market during the last year, adding that the bank is intervening only when there is excessive dollars.
The SBP also predicted that inflation could exceed its goal from April and June. Employees informed the Commission that the IMF allowed a 1.2% value of a gap between Rupia and the dollar.
In the last decade, Pakistan’s GDP growth has averaged only 3%, while remittances for current use are estimated at $ 40 billion. The government has reinstated the incentive system – offering the banks 20 riyals for each $ 200 transaction – after observing input reduction after its previous withdrawal.
Member of the Sharmila Faruqui Commission has questioned whether interest rates should now be reduced, as persistent inflationary pressures. The next monetary policy meeting is scheduled for September 15.
During the meeting, Naveed Qamar strongly criticized the Ministry of Industries and the production of his absence and failure to inform the Commission on the imposition of coal imposed in the context of the new power electric vehicles.
He said that parliament had been misleading, even during the budget meeting, adding that “the government believes that its work is being done while parliament can go to waste”. The Commission also postponed an information on the policy of electric vehicles.
The NA team opposed the Corporate Social Responsibility Bill (CSR) 2025 introduced by the SECP, which suggests that speculation companies distribute 1% of their net profits in social work.
Naveed Qamar claimed that this should be mandatory, while state minister Bilal Azhar Kayani opposed, saying that he would equate a new tax. Members of the Hina Rabbani Khar and Mubeen Arif also raised concerns, while Dr. Nafisa Shah has called for the bill to be reviewed at the next meeting.
The committee also examined the 10% GST imposition on former-fata. Members had said that two lobbies were actively working for and against tax.
Naveed Qamar noted that while the levy is targeting imports and exports associated with industrial production, residents are opposed to taxation on local consumption. The FBR president suggested that BISP subsidize to the locals as compensation.
