Karachi: The Pakistani State Bank (SBP) possessed its key policy rate at 12% on Monday, choosing stability despite the relaxation of inflation, which is expected to be temporarily increased in March and May.
The decision comes after a delegation of the International Monetary Fund (of the IMF), reviewed the Pakistani $ 7 billion rescue package, discussing new revenue targets and tax measures that may affect inflation and monetary policy.
The Central Bank’s relaxation cycle, one of the most aggressive among emerging markets, follows a series of interest rates cuts that total 1,000 base points (BPS) in six months, which took the main interest rate at 12% in January, from a 22% record.
Inflation decreased to 2.4% in January – the lowest to more than nine years – and is expected to decline further to 2.2% in February, supporting the case for further relaxation.
However, the risks remain as core inflation is still increased, the current account deficit is expanding and market yields are increasing, suggesting that SBP can slow down interest rate cuts, according to analysts.
By stabilizing inflation, but external pressures continue to remain, analysts believe that the SBP is approaching the end of the rhythm cut cycle and can shift to an approach with the data in the coming months.
Pakistan could unlock a further funding installment if the IMF review is approved before the June budget is launched, as it seeks financial reforms undertaken by the IMF program.
Providing a moderate increase from March to May, some analysts believe that the central bank will stop when rates hit 10.5% to 11% due to the possible increase in inflation.
Inflation will “sink” in the first quarter of the year before the gradual increase, said Ahmad Mobeen, a senior S&P Global economist, who expects a 6.1% inflation for 2025.
Despite the “sharp fall” in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), it said that the inflation of urban core, indicative of prices, remained high at 7.8%.
According to the IMF rescue of $ 7 billion, the Pakistani $ 350 billion economy increased by 0.92% in the first quarter of the Taxation 2024-25 expiring in June, according to figures approved by the National Accounts Committee and released in December.
