Two Russian aircraft hit trains at a station in the Northern Sumy area of Ukraine, killing a person and injuring about 30 others, officials said on Saturday, with Ukraine Foreign Minister accusing Moscow of deliberate passenger hits.
“A violent Russian strike at Shostka Railway Station, Sumy region,” wrote Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on the telegram, placing a video of a wreck, burning passengers and others with their windows.
Ukraine Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has accused Russia of deliberately conducting two strikes on passenger trains.
“This is one of the most violent Russian tactics-the so-called ‘double fountain’, when the second strike strikes rescuers and people evacuated,” he said in a statement published by his ministry on social media.
The governor of the area Sumy Oleh Hryhorov said eight people had been taken to the hospital.
“The Russians could not ignore that they are aiming for citizens. This is terrorism that people have no right to ignore,” Zelenskiy wrote.
Moscow has boosted its air raids on Ukraine’s railway infrastructure, hitting it almost every day in the last two months.
Russia has repeatedly denied the targeting of civilians in its war in Ukraine, though many thousands have been killed by its army.
Aircraft hunted for engines
In a video interview from a train on the way to the strike area, Ukrainian state -owned CEO Oleksandr Pertsovskyi said Reuters That the aircraft had also targeted the engines, also destroying the trolleys associated with them.
“In essence, they are hunting for locomotives,” he said, adding that Russia is increasingly developing this tactic.
He said that the train hit was a local travel service and another train headed to the capital of KIEB.
The railway leader added that there was only political traffic at the station and that he believed it was an attempt to become areas such as Shostka, which is about 50 kilometers from the Russian border, unsafe for passenger traffic.
“They do everything to do the first areas and border areas uninhabited so that people are afraid to go there, they are afraid to get on trains, they are afraid to concentrate on the markets and so that students are afraid to return home.”
