Russia announced on Sunday that it had gained full control of the Ukrainian town of Avdiivka, marking its biggest territorial gain in nine months. Reuters mentionted.

The arrest follows Ukraine’s withdrawal, although Russian officials noted that some Ukrainian troops remain holed up in a massive Soviet-era coke factory after fierce fighting.

This victory, the biggest since Bakhmut’s capture in May 2023, coincides almost exactly with the second anniversary of President Vladimir Putin’s order for a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Russia’s defense ministry reported an advance of 8.6 kilometers (5.3 miles) on the 1,000-kilometer front line, with Avdiivka left largely deserted and in ruins after intense urban fighting.

While Ukraine explained its withdrawal as a strategic move to prevent a full encirclement after months of heavy fighting, Putin hailed the fall of Avdiivka as a critical victory and praised Russian troops.

The significance of Avdiivka’s capture extends beyond territorial gains, potentially providing a morale boost for Putin ahead of his upcoming re-election bid. The move also aligns with Moscow’s broader goal of securing control over the industrial region of Donbass.

Meanwhile, concerns about arms shortages in Ukraine, exacerbated by delayed US military aid due to congressional opposition, have raised challenges for Ukrainian forces facing Russian aggression.

President Joe Biden, recognizing the urgency, reiterated the US commitment to support Ukraine and urged Congress to quickly approve a military aid package.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, addressing a global security conference, called for international help to overcome the arms shortage.

The battle for Avdiivka highlights the need for modern air defense systems and long-range weapons, according to Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov.

With both sides remaining tight-lipped about the casualties, the fall of Avdiivka is a pivotal development with far-reaching implications for the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
