LONDON:
With a single behind Point Joe Root he climbed over Ricky Ponting to become the second highest scorer in test history, stressing his status as a giant of the sport.
The former Captain of England exceeded 13,378 Ponting routes when he arrived at 120 in the fourth test against India in Old Trafford on Friday.
Earlier on the day he had slipped beyond Rahul Dravid of India and Jacques Kallis of South Africa and now there is only one man on him – Sachin Tendulkar.
The Grand Indian retired in 2013 with 15,921 testing tests in his name, but few will bet against the indefinite root that removes him.
“Great from the root, this is a great time in history,” said former Australian Captain Ponting at Sky Sports, as Manchester’s crowd was to applaud and chant Yorkshireman’s name.
“The way in which his career left, there is absolutely no reason why he will not go through Tendulkar.”
The elegant root, 34, is a return to a different era of batting, an Orthodox “Touch” player who does not need to break the ball to score quickly.
The former Captain of England Alastair Cook greeted him as “the greatest” of England and a “genius” when he surpassed his own record of 33 hundreds tests for England last year.
Another former governor, Nasser Hussain, described him as a “Generational Talent of England” with the bat.
Root played for the same collective club of Sheffield as Michael Vaughan, following the former Captain of England in the first Yorkshire team.
He just 14 in the first key key debut against a team at Loughborough University in 2010, but after two encouraging times with Yorkshire he was chosen to browse India in 2012.
England Spinner Graeme Swann likened Batsman to a baby to a team mascot, but the root took his opportunity when he came, making a patient 73 of 229 balls in the final test at Nagpur.
His rise continued with a first trial of a hundred next year against New Zealand at his home at home, a maiden ash in the two months of Lord two months later.
There was a dip in Australia, where the root still has to score a test century as it lost the form during England 2013/14 Ashes Whitewash.
The root, fell for the fifth test in Sydney, responded in style back to the ground at home with double hundred against Sri Lanka in Lord, followed by two centuries against India.
The routes have entered the Yorkshireman firmly despite the occasional concerns at times, now they have been largely forgotten, above his conversion rate – the number of times he went to score hundreds after fifty.
‘Big Four’
Root is in an elite bracket as a member of the “Big Four” Batsmen of the modern game alongside Steve Smith of Australia, Virat Kohli of India, who has now retired from the Test Cricket and Kane Williamson of New Zealand.
Yorkshireman, who has also received 73 test wicked trials with his bowling, succeeded Cook – the only other Batsman in England to have 10,000 tests – as a captain in 2017.
He continued to lead England to more tests (64) and achieve more wins (27) than any previous governor, but was in charge of a team.
He maintained his own standards with the bat during his time at the helm, more strikingly in 2021, when he scored 1,708 runs on average 61 and was called a test cricket of the year.
Root’s term as governor ended in frustration in April 2022 after a series of a single win of 17 matches, with Ben Stokes taking responsibility.
The former governor has proven to be necessary under Stokes, marking 13 of his trials hundreds after being released from the burden of the captain.
The root has occasionally overcome, while flirting with a more dangerous style in the extremely aggressive “Bazball” era under Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum.
But he has greatly played his own game, with a rare talent to keep the scoreboard beating by playing in a classic, relatively dangerous.
Root’s average testing is more than 50, the signal of a long time all the time and remains the basic of the England team.
He has a long way to go to catch Tendulkar, but few will question his hunger and ability to end his career right at the top.
“It was a privilege to watch him strike from these milestones,” former England governor Michael Atherton told Sky. “It was also a privilege to see his career unfold.” AFP
