Former Indian cricketer and commentator Sunil Gavaskar has suggested that Rohit Sharma may voluntarily step down as Test captain if he fails to perform with the bat in the upcoming Tests in Melbourne and Sydney.

India are playing a five-match red-ball series against Australia, and both teams have leveled the series by winning one match each. Two more matches to go as the third Test ended in a draw this morning at the Gamba.

The next race will start on December 25 in Melbourne.

Speaking of ABC Sports on Tuesday, Gavaskar expressed his belief that Rohit would not wait for the selectors to decide whether to continue his matches.

“I think Rohit will definitely get a chance to play the next two matches,” Gavaskar said. “However, if he doesn’t deliver with the bat, I think he will take the decision himself.

Describing Rohit as a dedicated player, Gavaskar added: “He is deeply committed to Indian cricket and would never want to be in charge of the team. If he doesn’t score runs in the next two games, I think he will put his one aside.”

Rohit’s recent form in Test cricket has been impressive. In his last 13 innings, he averaged just 11.83, scoring only 152 runs with a solitary half-century.

“It’s the line, I think the stump line was bothering him a lot.” The Indian Express quoted Cheteshwar Pujara as saying ESPNcricinfo.

“He’s been coming out for a while and he’s bowling (six of his last ten dismissals) which worries him a bit.”

Dinesh Karthik believes Rohit Sharma’s recent dip in form stems from a lack of confidence.

Speaking of Cricbuzzsaid Karthik, “It’s time for him to dig deep and fight it out. He has to stay in the crease, avoid risky shots on difficult courts and trust his technique.”

Highlighting Rohit’s vast experience, Karthik added, “Rohit has been playing international cricket for 17 years. To suggest that his technique isn’t solid would be surprising. Like any player, he has his weaknesses, but it’s all about determination and grit.”

Karthik highlighted that Rohit’s mindset could be the key to overcoming this phase.

“I’m not sure if he really believes in himself at the moment, which could affect his confidence. But if he focuses and commits to the challenge, he can silence those doubts. What India needs most is a mentally strong Rohit Sharma.”
