Veteran cricketer and former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has spoken about his former team-mate Jason Gillespie’s role as Pakistan’s Test coach, saying the former paceman’s record has been good with every team he has worked with.

“[Jason] Gillespie looks a bit like Gautam Gambhir. Almost everywhere he’s gone, his coaching record has been very, very good. It will have some challenges I have no doubt. But he’s a deep thinker and like I said, a quiet man who does it his way,” Ponting said.

The former Pacer has been appointed as Pakistan’s red-ball coach ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024 and the upcoming two-Test series against Bangladesh will be his first assignment as a coach.

“We’ve had a few WhatsApp groups over the years, all us oldies who have played together. So everyone congratulated him [Gillespie] and wished him the best of luck in that role,” Ponting said.

He also compared his former team-mate to India coach Gautam Gambhir before adding that the Aussies will have some challenges in the green jerseys.

The former Australian skipper added that the changes in Pakistan’s coaching set-up came as no surprise after their abysmal T20 World Cup campaign, where the Babar Azam-led unit crashed out of the group stage for the first time in the tournament’s history.

“And look, to be honest, I’m not at all surprised by the amount of changes in this group. I know it’s a different format, but they had a very disappointing T20 World Cup. If you’re not prepared to make some changes, you expect similar results,” he added.
