Three Dead in Rawalpindi-Islamabad Rain as Nullah Lai Peaks at 29.5 Feet

Three people died in Tuesday’s rain across Rawalpindi and Islamabad, a toll that emerged only after the water receded (Dawn).

Those who died

– Faizan Ashraf, 20, when a house roof collapsed at G-14 – Yahswa Azhar, 17, drowned in a nullah at I-9/1 – Sohail Asghar, 50, electrocuted in Arya Mohallah after a shock from a UPS

One further person was critically injured in the roof collapse.

An update to what we reported

This newspaper reported on Tuesday that no deaths had been recorded, and said explicitly that the figure was provisional while water levels remained high. It was. Two other figures have also moved: Nullah Lai peaked at 29.5 feet at Katarian, not the 23.5 feet reported during the event, and at 20 feet at Gawalmandi. Both readings have since fallen back sharply — to 10 feet and 7 feet respectively by Tuesday afternoon.

The evacuation threshold is 20 feet.

The rainfall

A meteorological official said Tuesday’s rain was the heaviest of this monsoon season and the highest in three years.

| Location | Rainfall | |—|—| | Shamsabad | 201mm | | Chaklala | 191mm | | New Kattarian | 187mm | | Golra | 157mm | | Zero Point | 152mm | | Saidpur Village | 105mm | | Pirwadhai | 87mm | | Kutchery | 78mm | | Bokra | 72mm | | Airport | 18mm |

The spread is worth noting: 201mm at Shamsabad against 18mm at the airport, in the same twin-city area on the same night.

Rescue

Rescue 1122 evacuated 60 people — 30 passengers from the Rahimabad bridge, eight from Kuri Road, eight from Dhoke Kala Khan and six women from Darulaman.

All educational institutions in Rawalpindi city were closed on Tuesday by order of the district administration.
