Rahm ‘Sure’ to lift the British Open

Rahm ‘Sure’ to lift the British Open

Portrush:

Jon Rahm said on Tuesday that he “feels confident” before his attempt to finish Spain’s 37 -year -old waiting for a British Open title when the 153rd edition of the Royal Portrush begins this week. The two -time big champion hopes to become only the second Spaniard to raise the Claret jug after three times the winner of Seve Ballesteros.

Rahm posted the Top-10 Finishes both at the US Open and the PGA Championship this year and arrives in Northern Ireland after coming to Talor Goch at the LIV Golf event in Valderrama.

“I always feel close, I’m always sure I’m there,” he told reporters.

“Last week, especially on Sunday, it was very nice, it was a very good round of golf … so I feel good, I feel confident. Spain has not enjoyed a British open triumph since the third victory of Ballesteros in 1988, but has come close several times since then.

The champion twice Masters Jose Maria Olazabal finished twice a third, while Sergio Garcia was run in 2007 and 2014.

Rahm is today the country’s main hope of offering an open success.

He threatened a return victory in 2021 before he ended in a tie for the third behind the final Collin Morikawa and was part of a long -term tie for the second behind Brian Harman two years ago.

“Obviously there were some (Spanish candidates). The gentlemen, Ollie and Sergio, had their chances,” the 30 -year -old said. “It’s never easy to win a big one and it’s never easy to win an open.”

Rahm depends on strong significant performance to automatically qualify for the defense of Europe’s Ryder Cup in New York in September because of his status as a LIV golf player.

He stands 20th on the list of points and will probably need a wildcard from Luke Donald to make the team for the Bethpage Black.

“Yes, it was in my mind,” Rahm said of the Ryder Cup, in which he has won 7.5 points from three appearances.

“It was in my mind a year ago. And it will continue in my mind as much as I play golf in my career.

“So, the Ryder Cup is always there. Obviously when I wake up in the morning here, I think of this (British Open), but the Ryder Cup will always be on my mind.”
