KARACHI:
The proposal for a ‘Super 6’ round in PSL 11 has failed to gain support as stakeholders fear that the elimination of two teams after the initial round could dampen public interest.
The tournament will consist of 35 to 44 matches and each team will play at least once against every other team in the initial stage.
According to details, a key meeting between PSL executives and franchise owners/representatives was held yesterday. Team officials attended via video call.
Surprisingly, Multan Sultans owner Ali Tareen, who was recently in the media limelight for his bold statements, did not attend in person, though his representative was present.
Sources said the format of the tournament was discussed in detail. Due to the World Cup schedule, next year’s PSL will also not be held in its traditional period.
It has already been decided to hold the event in April-May. The PCB has shared various format suggestions, which will be further considered.
Maintaining the current format is not feasible as 60 matches would make the tournament last around two months.
Under the new proposed structure, each team will play at least one match against every other team in the league round, with one or two additional matches to be decided later.
In total, between 35 and 44 matches are expected.
Officials proposed a ‘Super 6’ stage similar to ICC events where two teams would be eliminated after the initial round.
However, the franchises opposed the idea, arguing that since the league represents city-based teams, removing two sides early would hurt fan participation.
PCB officials informed the participants that an audit firm will soon inform each franchise of its updated valuation within this week. Any concerns could be raised either with the company or directly with the board.
“Are we among the eligible teams?” — official of the Multan Sultans
During the meeting, a Multan Sultans representative asked: “The PCB keeps referring to eligible franchises – does that include us?”
In response, PSL chief Salman Naseer said, “I will talk to you individually after this meeting.”
“Help recover outstanding dues,” PCB urges franchisees
Usman Wahla is back in PSL business. attends the meeting
During the meeting, the PCB officials also sought dispensation to help recover outstanding payments from various stakeholders as the board is still waiting for several dues to be cleared.
Meanwhile, former Director of International Cricket Usman Wahla rejoined the PSL schedule and attended the meeting. The franchises were officially informed that two new teams will be added to the 11th edition of the tournament, although no further details were discussed.
Player retention issues were also part of the meeting’s agenda.
