Political chaos, excessive energy costs are cited as key challenges

KARACHI:

Sindh’s former caretaker minister for industries and commerce Muhammad Younus Dagha said that if two major challenges, including political instability and high energy costs, are brought under control, the country can grow by leaps and bounds.

He said that the caretaker government had made efforts to improve the performance of government services despite the limited time and won laurels. “The system of electronic services must be continued and not reversed. Karachi unfortunately has no say in policymaking despite the fact that it contributes significant revenue to the national exchequer.”

He emphasized the need to address the issues of the industries at the higher echelons of the government with all facts and figures. Talking about transportation fees, Daga said a comprehensive presentation will be delivered to the government quarters once the country pays $3-4 billion annually in transportation fees.

He said this while speaking to the business community at a reception hosted in his honor by the SITE Association of Industry (SAI).

Earlier, SAI Chairman Muhammad Kamran Arbi appreciated the efforts of Younus Dagha during his tenure as minister in resolving industry related issues by initiating coordination with all relevant agencies and launching e-services and digitization of land record of all industrial areas in the province. “He has worked and expedited the backlog in all relevant departments.”

Meanwhile, while expressing concern over the poor law and order situation, including rising street crimes and target killings in Karachi, which has weighed on business, business leaders while sharing their views with The Express Tribune said that Eliminating street crime, armed robbery and targeted killings must be a top priority for both the federal and provincial governments.

Karachiites and business leaders have been railing against the crime rate, but to no avail so far, they said. The businessmen added that although the port city paid the highest taxes among all cities in the country, “it is a real shame that Karachiites have been left at the mercy of murderers and robbers.”

“A Karachi Safe City (KSC) project drama has been brewing for years without any materialisation.”

They said bureaucrats and politicians always enjoyed all the perks in luxury office-residences and VIP tours and police security. “These people ignore the plight, the suffering and the agony of the people of Karachi.”
