KARACHI: Former Pakistan cricket coach Mickey Arthur has raised concerns about the impact of over-promoting players, saying it distracts them from reality and makes them think they are more important than they actually are.

“Inconsistency around selection, environment and management plays into team morale, gives players structure and they will perform,” Arthur said in a post on X.

His remarks come against the backdrop of the Shan Masood-led side’s shock defeat to England, where the latter secured an innings-clinching 47-run win on the fifth day of the first Test in Multan.

During the match, despite scoring 556 runs in the first innings, the national team found themselves under the gun, trailing England by 115 runs at the end of the fourth day and then collapsing under pressure on the final day.

Arthur emphasized that Pakistan’s players are extremely talented and deserve their places in the team. However, he stressed that to improve performance, consistency in selection, environment and management is vital.

“The players are very, very capable and they are the right ones,” said the former manager.

He also pointed to the harmful role of media-based narratives, describing how negative media rhetoric can harm the group, noting that “ugly rhetoric from the media and media-based agendas don’t help.”

A key point in Arthur’s criticism was the over-promotion of players by actors or the media, which he believes gives them a false sense of importance.

“The promotion of players by agents or the media sometimes makes the player think they are much more important than they really are, creating a false impression,” Arthur pointed out.

The former coach stressed that representing Pakistan should be the pinnacle of a player’s career.

“Playing for Pakistan has got to be the best time!” he noticed.
