CITY GAZA:
Hamas and her ally Islamic Jihad, as well as Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, provocatively reacted to Sunday’s idea of US President Donald Trump for forced displacement of Gaza residents in Egypt and Jordania to People will never leave their homeland.
As the ceasefire in Gaza entered the second week after 15 months of war, Trump said Gaza had become a “demolition place”, adding that he spoke with the King of Jordan Abdallah about the movement of Palestinians from the ground and in Egypt and Jordan.
Jordan Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said that “our rejection of Palestinian displacement is stable and will not change. Jordan is for the Jordanians and Palestine is for the Palestinians.” Egypt has previously warned of any “forced movement” of Palestinians from Gaza to the Sinai desert.
President Abbas condemned “any plans” for the relocation of the Gaza population outside the territory. Without naming the US leader, Abbas “expressed the intense rejection and condemnation of any plan aimed at displacement of our people by the Gaza Strip”.
In a statement from his office, he said that the Palestinian people “will not leave their land” and the sacred places. “We will not allow the disaster that hit our people in 1948 and 1967,” the announcement is added.
The first is known to the Palestinians as Nakba, or “disaster”, when hundreds of thousands were displaced during the war that coincided with the creation of Israel. During the 1967 war, known as Naksa, or “regression”, Israel occupied Gaza and the West Bank and displaced hundreds of thousands of others.
Abbas also rejected “any policy that undermines the unity of Palestinian land in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including Eastern Jerusalem.” He called on Trump to “continue his efforts to support” the ceasefire in Gaza that began on January 19th.
Speaking to reporters at Air Force One, Trump said that almost everything was demolished in Gaza and people were dying there. He added that moving Gaza residents may be “temporary or long -term”.
The US president said he wanted the Gaza residents to relocate to Egypt and Jordan. “Therefore, I would prefer to get involved with some of the Arab nations and build houses in a different location where they can live peacefully for a change,” he said.
“You’re talking about one and a half million people, and we are just cleaning it all. You know, over the centuries it has had many, many conflicts on this site. And I don’t know, something must happen,” the US president told reporters.
Most of Gaza residents are Palestinian refugees or their descendants. For them, any attempt to move from Gaza would wake up dark memories from Nakba. Jordan already hosts about 2.3 million registered Palestinian refugees, according to the United Nations.
Bassem Naim, a member of Hamas’ Political Bureau, told the French agency that the Palestinians would “prevent such projects”, as they did with similar plans “for displacement and alternative homelands for decades”.
Islamic Jihad described the idea as “deplorable” because it encouraged “war crimes and crimes against humanity forcing our people to abandon its land.” On the other hand, far -right Israeli finance minister Bezalel Smotrich said Trump’s proposal “is an excellent idea”.
Earlier this month, Qatar and the US have been mediated by a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas after 15 months of war. Sighing relief from a relentless Israeli Genocide campaign, residents of Gaza tried to return to their leveled homes after the start of the truce last Sunday.
But a controversy associated with the latest exchange of hostages-detainees under the truce agreement led to huge crowds of Palestinians blocking a coastal road after they were prevented from returning to the northern part of the area. The exchange released four Israeli female soldiers and 200 Palestinian prisoners on Saturday.
However, Israel announced on Saturday that it would prevent the Palestinians’ passage until the liberation of Arbel Johd, a civilian hostage woman who said Netanyahu’s office said “supposedly will be released”. Israel said Hamas had violated the truce.
Ismail Al-tawabtah, general manager of the Gaza Gaza Government Office, also said that tens of thousands were waiting at the junction. He set the total number of Gaza residents who want to return to the north to “between 615,000 and 650,000”.
