The margin reconciles precisely: England made 409, against Pakistan’s 171 and 135.
The collapse
Pakistan lost their last seven wickets for 76 runs in the afternoon session of the third day.
Jofra Archer removed Imam-ul-Haq for a duck in the second over and Azan Awais for nine in his next, leaving Pakistan 13 for 2. Abdullah Shafique made 15 in a stand of 38 with Shan Masood before Ollie Robinson dismissed him in the 14th over. Pakistan went to lunch at 59 for 3 and did not survive the session that followed.
Mohammad Rizwan top-scored with a 39-ball 41. Masood made 29, Shafique 15 and Saud Shakeel 14. Nobody else reached double figures.
Robinson, Archer and Brydon Tongue took three wickets each; Gus Atkinson took one.
The one bright spot
Ali Usman’s maiden five-wicket haul stands as the tourists’ single achievement of the match, and it is a considerable one.
The left-arm spinner finished with 5 for 92 in England’s first innings — and became the first overseas spinner since 1972 to take a five-wicket haul at Headingley, a gap of fifty-four years (Geo News).
England resumed the third morning on 364 for 8 and added 45 before being bowled out for 409 in 89.5 overs.
The scale of the defeat
Pakistan were bowled out for 171 on the opening day, conceded a first-innings lead of 238, and then lost by an innings with more than two days to spare in a match whose first session was washed out.
They were without Babar Azam, ruled out before the match by the team’s coach.
