Outrage erupts as Indian farm worker Satnam Singh dies in Italy after arm severed in work accident

The death of 31-year-old Indian farm worker Satnam Singh in Italy has sparked outrage in the local Indian community and trade unions.

Satnam Singh was working on a farm near Latina, southeast of Rome, when he lost his right arm in an accident with a plastic wrapping machine.

He was then loaded into a truck and abandoned near his home, with his severed hand in a vegetable bin.
Singh died on Wednesday at the San Camillo hospital in Rome, sparking outrage and calls for a demonstration on Saturday in Latina.
Unions and the Indian community are staging protests in the coming days, demanding dignity and respect for workers and condemning Italy’s system of gang rule.

An investigation has begun for the farm’s owner, Antonello Lovato, who faces possible charges of involuntary manslaughter and failure to render aid to a person in danger.

Addressing claims that Singh was abandoned without an ambulance being called, the Lovato family’s lawyer, Valerio Righi, suggested the process would reveal that help may have been called earlier than people think.

The farm owner’s father, Renzo Lovato, expressed his sadness at the incident, saying: “A man died on the job and it should never happen.”

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned Singh’s death, saying: “These are inhuman acts that do not belong to the Italian people and I hope that this barbarity will be severely punished.”

Labor Minister Marina Elvira Calderone also spoke out, calling for harsh punishments against labor exploitation and calling the incident “an inhuman act of brutality.”

Several unions have organized a demonstration for Saturday in Latina, calling for a two-hour strike to demand dignity and respect for workers and to fight against worker exploitation and inhumane conditions.

The Indian Latina community will also protest on June 25 in Singh’s memory and deliver an open letter to Latina Prefect Mauricio Falco, calling for action and reporting the incident.
