Oleksandr USyk fell on the British Daniel Dubois in the fifth round of a fascinating competition at Wembley Stadium on Saturday to become the undisputed World Boxing Champion of heavyweight.
Niki saw USYK keep the WBC, WBA and WBO zones and recovered the IBF zone that ended last year before a rematch with Tyson Fury, with Dubois upgraded to the champion and then defending the title against Anthony Joshua last September.
The USYK’s ability was evident from the beginning, as it violated everything that threw its way with misleading ease and repeatedly connected with its jab, putting a masterclass in opposite of an opponent 11 years younger than him.
Asked about the victory, the USYK said: “38 is a young man, remember! 38 is only (h) start!
“I want to say thank you to Jesus Christ. I want to say thank you to my team and to Wembley. Thank you very much! They are for the people.
“Nothing is next. It’s enough. Then I don’t know. I want to rest. My family, my wife, my children, I want to rest now, two or three months. I want to rest.”
USYK, who improved his professional record to 24-0, is now a triple unquestionable champion, twice in the heavyweight section and once as cruiserweight.
Fifth round strike-down
Although weighing in a 227.3 pound career on Friday, USYK ran around the ring with an almost ballistic grace and prevented Dubois from making the most of its highest size.
The Ukrainian comfortably surpassed his opponent in three of the first four rounds, but most of the damage was chosen in a brutal fifth round.
The Ukrainian sent his opponent to the canvas with an overhand to the right, before a rising left hand right on the coil broke Dubois’ dreams and ended the race.
Dubois was provocative after his loss, saying to Dazn: “I have to congratulate him on the show, I gave everything I had.
“Don’t take away from this man. I’ll be back. I’m just struggling. Trying to pick up around the round. It’s what he is.”
The Ukrainian also hints at a possible third match against Britain’s fury, which he won twice last year.
“Maybe we have three options, (Fury), Derek Chisora and Anthony Joshua.
The unification match was a rematch one that Dubois lost from a controversial knockout knockout in Wroclaw, Poland in 2023, after the USYK took time to recover from what the referee decided was a low blow.
Earlier in the Undercard, British Lawrence Okolie defeated South African Kevin Lerena with a unanimous decision in an indifferent competition.
