Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has agreed on a new ceasefire proposal for Gaza, presented by the US special envoy to Steve Witkoff in the Middle East. Growth marks a possible discovery in efforts to stop the conflict of months and to ensure the release of Hamas’ remaining hostages.
According to Israeli state -run Broadcasting Kan, Netanyahu has transferred the acceptance of the US government’s government during a hostage -host -door meeting, some of whom are believed to have died. The prime minister’s office has not yet issued an official statement.
Meanwhile, the Palestinian fighter team of Hamas has confirmed that it had received the proposal through intermediaries and is currently considering its content.
Referring to senior Israeli officials, Kan said the proposal describes a 60 -day ceasefire in Gaza in exchange for the release of 10 hostages and the ruins of the 18 others, which will take place in two phases. In return, Israel would release 1,236 Palestinian prisoners, including 180 Palestinian bodies.
Specifically, the agreement does not require Israel to permanently end its ongoing military campaign in Gaza, but it is committed to both parties to start negotiations for long -term truce. The United States, Egypt and Qatar would act as guarantors of the proposed agreement.
Israel believes that 58 hostages remain in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive. They were taken during the Hamas -led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which caused an Israeli -scale attack on the enclave.
A previous ceasefire agreement, implemented in phases, collapsed in March 2024 after the release of 33 hostages. Israel stopped further negotiations and reiterated military operations on March 18.
The conflict has strongly charged citizens. Gaza health authorities report that more than 54,000 people have been killed in the territory since the start of Israeli businesses in October 2023.
The new initiative highlights US efforts to bring both sides back to the negotiating table. The inclusion of Egypt and Qatar – basic regional bodies – marks a multilateral boost to stabilize the deterioration of the humanitarian crisis.
The next few days will be critical, as Hamas reviews the proposal and Israeli authorities are facing increasing pressure from hostage families and the international community to reach an agreement.
If accepted, the ceasefire could provide a very necessary postponement for Gaza citizens and open the door to broader political negotiations aimed at ending one of the most devastating conflicts in the region for decades.
