NBA back to China after six years of absence caused the Tweet of democracy

Hong Kong:

The NBA returns to China’s lucrative market this week with two pre-seasons after six years of absence after an official tweeted team to support protests in favor of the Republic in Hong Kong.

Brooklyn’s nets and Phoenix Suns will play sales on Friday and Sunday in Macao, a special administrative area of China near Hong Kong.

China, the second largest economy in the world, effectively reduced links with the championship in 2019, as NBA executives were behind Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey.

About 125 million people are playing basketball in China, according to official statistics, and Commissioner NBA Adam Silver said the championship lost “hundreds of millions of dollars” over the split, which included matches initially taken on Chinese television.

Deng Weijian, a 24 -year -old student, called on basketball an indispensable part of his life, saying that “although official broadcasting bodies banned the NBA, I found other channels to watch it and so did the people around me.”

“The NBA must learn a lesson, which is to avoid sensitive issues and let basketball return to be a skill competition,” Deng said.

The return of the championship coincides with unstable US-China relations under US President Donald Trump, with US companies hoping to attract Chinese consumers while competing for political control at home.

Silver said in 2019 that one of the long -term NBA prices was to support freedom of expression.

“We are relying on the US Foreign Ministry for guidance everywhere we involved fans around the world, including China and over 200 other countries and territories,” said NBA Mark Tatum’s deputy commissioner and chief executive in a written answer this week.

Asked if the NBA supported its community members to express views on China, Tatum replied: “Yes.”

‘Threads of rage’

The NBA fanbase in China has been steadily developed since the teams first played in the country in 1979 and its popularity was overloaded by its eight-time NBA All-Star Yao Ming mattress.

Between 2004 and 2019, 17 teams played a total of 28 pre-season games in the country.

This ended at the end of 2019 after Morey published a picture with the slogan “Fight for Freedom, Stand with Hong Kong” at the height of protests in favor of democracy in Chinese funding.

Mark Dreyer, author of a book on China’s sports industry, said the incident was a “perfect storm” that worsened the way the championship issued different statements in Chinese and English.

“Fans in the US believed they were too mandatory to the Chinese government … (and) the Chinese side believed it was not deferential,” Dreyer said.

Luo Yi, an NBA fan from Yao Ming’s days, said he believed Morey “expressed a personal view” without thinking of the consequences on national or championship.

The spat depicted an ongoing trend of China nationalism, where online emotion and state -owned media converge on “spiral of rage”, according to Australian National University Professor Debby Chan.

“Criticism of Chinese youths were reinforced by state media” during the Morey incident, Chan, who is investigating the Chinese economic status.

Soft landing;

The Chinese shows of the NBA games eventually reiterated and last year the championship signed a multi-million dollar deal to stage pre-sessions in Macao.

The matches this week will take place at the Venetian Arena, part of the Las Vegas Sands group controlled by the ADelson family, who is the majority ownership team at Dallas Mavericks.

Macao is the only place in China where the game of casinos is legal.

Both games sold within a few hours, the NBA said.

Dreyer said NBA’s return was never disputed because China was a “basic market”, with the championship reportedly hosting two games a year for five years.

“It’s a smart move to go to Macao because it’s a soft landing,” he said.

Dreyer said he believed that the NBA would be able to avoid repeating the 2019 disaster.

“Everyone knew how bad the championship was burning in China. No one is going to mix the container deliberately,” he said.

But Chan lecturer said it was “difficult to determine the changing red lines of Chinese nationalist consumers”, showing recent examples of trademarks rushing to define Beijing.

Manufacturer He Xixuan, 26, said that “politics should not be part of basketball”, adding that the sport could be a way for the Chinese and Americans to find common ground.

“If everyone is talking about sports and not national policy, this can be good for both sides,” he said.
