NATO agrees mass costs

NATO agrees mass costs

The Hague:

NATO countries agreed on Wednesday to massively increase their defense spending to satisfy US President Donald Trump, who welcomed it as a “monumental victory” for America – and confirmed its country’s commitment to protect its European allies.

Trump cut a charming figure after 32 NATO countries agreed to the title of his goal five percent of GDP in defense spending after two days of talks in The Hague.

Taking credit for a “fantastic” result that “no one really believed possible”, Trump described the spending hike as a “monumental victory for the United States”.

“They said you did it, sir,” he said in a press conference. “Well I don’t know if I did – but I think I did.”

In a reassuring move for European allies who were worried about the threat from Russia, Trump signed a statement by the final leaders who confirms our “IronClad commitment” on NATO’s collective defense that the attack on one is an attack on everyone.

NATO’s allies have supported the increase in spending to help tackle a growing threat from Russia, but also-and critical-to keep Trump to deal with, while the US leader repeatedly suggests that Washington could withhold their protection.

The deal appeared – for now at least – to have these handles set to rest.

The NATO compromise considers that countries promise to devote 3.5 % of GDP to basic military spending by 2035 and another 1.5 to wider security -related areas such as infrastructure.

When sending the target on paper, Spain said that it believes it could fulfill NATO’s demands, while spending less – winning a new reprimand on Wednesday by Trump, which threatened to hit its commercial interests in response.

However, the promise approved in The Hague allows Trump to claim a triumph, while in practice providing some mosquito hall for cash governments in Europe.

Diplomats said that behind the closed doors Trump had given strong assurances of Washington’s commitment as an ally and urged others to spend some of the new US weapons money.

Everything was choreographed at the Hague rally to maintain the US volatile president on board: from cutting the official part of the meeting to put him in the royal palace one night.

The support of leaders ‘debate on defense was Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine and another SOP in the Allies’ demands, the United States allowed NATO to refer to the “long -term threat raised by Russia in Eurotlantic security” in the Community.

Although her tongue was watered in previous years, the statement also stated that the allies would continue to support Ukraine “whose security contributes to our own” and could use money from the new commitment of spending on military aid for Kiev.

Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky played a less central role here than in previous peaks-with leaders to be cautious about any bust after the famous oval of the office shouting with Trump.
