A glamorous spiral that appeared in the night sky over Britain Monday night caused by a spacex Falcon 9 missile launch, experts confirmed.
The unusual formation, described by witnesses as “turbulent blue-white shine”, was visible for about 30 minutes as it moved slowly from north to south.
The phenomenon triggered speculations in social media, with some observers to initially suggest that it could be an unrecognized flight object (UFO) or a satellite readiness.
The experts later recognized the source of the show to the exhaust from a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, which had started from Cape Canaveral in Florida at 5:48 pm.
According to scientists, the frozen rocket exhaust, illuminated by the sunlight at high altitude, created the glamorous spiral effect. The United Kingdom Met Office confirmed that it had received multiple reports on the anomaly.
“This is likely to be caused by the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, which began earlier today,” said a Met Office spokesman. “The frozen rocket exhaust appears to rotate in the atmosphere and reflect the sunlight, causing it to appear as a spiral in the sky.”
Many British took the social media to share images and videos of the spiral. Ben Thomson of Hampshire was posted on X, a former Twitter, saying: “It was too slow for a satellite, but appeared to be at high altitude, was very bright at its central point and created a swirl phenomenon that is also illuminated as it moved.”
Others reported the observation of the hotlines UFO, causing further speculations before experts identified the real cause.
SpaceX later confirmed that the Falcon 9 rocket brought a graduated payload for the US government recognition office. Falcon 9, a reusable rocket, returned to Earth about eight minutes after launch.
According to satellite expert Dr. Tu Delft’s Marco Langbroek, the swirling shine was probably caused by a dumping fuel from the rocket. “Falcon 9 launches the remnant of it before it returns to the atmosphere,” he explained. “At high altitudes, the fuel freezes immediately, forming a spiral pattern as it scatters.”
Similar cases have been previously observed. In February, another Falcon 9 rocket launcher left trails that look like fire in the sky over Europe.
