Mohammad Rizwan, Aamer Jamal move up ICC Test rankings

India’s Virat Kohli ushered in the new year by returning to the top ten of the ICC Player Rankings, rising to ninth place after the last update on Wednesday.

Kohli’s 38 and 76 in India’s loss to South Africa was enough for the 35-year-old to move up four places (761), being India’s top run-scorer on the list.

On the other hand, opener Dean Elgar is likely to bow out as a top-20 batsman after his exploits in the first Test in Centurion, moving up 19 places to 17th (680) ahead of his final appearance.

Elgar slammed a commanding 185 against the tourists to seal an innings victory, helping the Proteas clinch 12 points in the World Test Championship in the process.

In Australia, the Boxing Day Test encounter with Pakistan saw little movement on the batting front, with Mitchell Marsh’s flurry leading to the most notable change, moving from 16th to 52nd (504). Mohammad Rizwan enjoyed a four-place jump after his attacking knock, while Travis Head maintained his place in the top 10 despite a quiet Boxing Day Test and a four-place drop, with a rating of 754.

New Zealand’s Kane Williamson still holds a marginal lead (864) over Joe Root (859), with Australia’s Steve Smith (820) third to go up during the Sydney Test starting on Wednesday.

On the Test bowling front, Jasprit Bumrah has re-entered the rankings following his return to Test cricket, placed fifth (767), just behind compatriot Ravindra Jadeja (774). Marco Janssen’s efforts saw him jump three places to 22nd (618), although he also jumped five places in the all-time rankings to 8th, moving to a career-best 268.

In the Australia/Pakistan series, new face Aamer Jamal continues to make a strong impression in the front row, climbing another 17 places in the bowling rankings to 57th.

The quick took 3/64 and 2/74, also scoring crucial runs and moving up 34 places to 68th in the all-time rankings.

There were also moves in the T20I player rankings, with Bangladesh facing New Zealand and the UAE hosting Bangladesh.

Mitch Santner’s four-wicket haul at Mount Maunganui headlined the moves in the shortest format, climbing eight places to eighth (657). Shoriful Islam’s excellent week saw him jump 32 spots, with Mustafizur Rahman also moving five places to 22nd (605).

There was plenty of action in Sharjah with Afghanistan edging the Emiratis 2-1 in the three-match series, with players from both sides enjoying leaps and bounds.

Afghanistan batsman Ibrahim Zadran led the batting movements, enjoying a 14-point jump to 33rd after a half-century in his midweek. On the bowling side, UAE’s Ali Naseer (up 29 places) and Muhammad Jawadullah (up 22 places) were the biggest movers.
