Geneva: Last year was the most deadly for immigrants, with about 9,000 people dying on dangerous routes and one in 10 of those who were violently killed in incidents such as shooting, the UN migration service said on Friday.
In 2024, at least 8,938 people died on migration routes, with the Asian routes being the most deadly followed by the Mediterranean interconnection and Africa, which includes the Sahara desert.
“Increasing deaths in so many areas in the world shows why we need an international, holistic response that can prevent the further tragic loss of life,” the International Organization for Migration Organization (IOM) for Ugochi Daniels in a statement said.
At least 10% of the total deaths of immigrants were the result of violence-a category that includes shots, stabbings and beatings and also includes state-owned murders of immigrants, IOM said.
The countries with the largest number of such violent deaths occurred in Iran, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Mexico, a IOM spokesman said, without saying who was responsible for the murders in each case.
Cases of immigrants drowning after being violently rushed to the sea coastguards are not recorded in the data for violent deaths, the spokesman added.
Iom data go back to 2014. Every year by 2021, the annual set of recorded immigrant deaths has increased, with many thousands more considered to be recorded annually due to the lack of official files, Iom says.
The Geneva -based organization is one of the many groups that help displaced people affected by significant cuts by the United States, forcing it to reduce the back or shutter programs that says it will have a serious impact on immigrants.
