MADRID:
Kylian Mbappe hit a brilliant hat-trick for Champions League holders Real Madrid in a 3-1 win over Manchester City on Wednesday, helping Los Blancos reach the last 16 with a total 6-3 victory.
The side of Pep Guardiola, hit by the main striker Erling Haaland, suffered a painful premature exit without putting a glove on the completely dominant winners record in the Spanish capital, until Nico Gonzalez fell home.
The French superstar Mbappe broke the deadlock with a lobe in the fourth minute and threw a minute after it was combined with its aggressive associates, as the English side was open.
The striker, in an impressive form after a slow start to life in Madrid, finished his second half with a low strike from the edge of the box to reach seven goals in the competition this season in 10 appearances.
“We wanted to win and pass because it was logical for us that Real Madrid would be in the last 16 of the Champions League,” Mbappe told the Movistar.
He has scored 28 goals this season, with 18 in the last 18 matches in all matches.
“I said it (before), I didn’t come to Real Madrid to play bad,” Mbappe continued.
“Making my dream is one thing, but I want to play well here, to point out a time and make a story in Real Madrid.”
The city, which won the competition in 2023, was far from their best, as was the case for much of their campaign.
“The best team won, they deserve to be there and we don’t,” Guardiola admitted to the Movistar.
“We had a bad year in the contest – when you finished the 22nd (in the team) it’s because we’re not good.
“It was our worst year … We are an incredible team and this year, for many reasons, we have lost this consistency.”
The city had shared bad news before the game with Haaland, who won twice in the first leg, named on the bench after a weekend hit against Newcastle.
The side of Carlo Ancelotti made almost perfectly off the off and took the lead in the early stages.
Mbappe got up from Ruben Dias and put the ball over City Ederson’s goalkeeper, after the young Centralism Raul Asencio played him with a long pass.
“It’s not easy when you admit such an early goal,” Guardiola said.
John Stones cut for visitors a few minutes later on another blow for the Premier League champions.
‘Played complete game’
Mbappe won his second in the 33rd minute after Madrid’s “Fantastic Four”. Jude Bellingham ate Vinicius, who put the ball for Rodrygo, who pushed it to the Mbappe.
Former Paris Saint-Germos slid forward to let the flaailing Josko Gvardiol slip in the wrong direction and pierce a house in the nearby post.
Guardiola had claimed that the city had only “one percent probability” defeating Madrid and his team played as they believed him.
Madrid’s only staining in his book was a booking for Bellingham for England’s pollution Phil Foden, letting him suspend for the last 16 legs.
Bellingham, who caused a disturbance sent for a dispute last weekend to La Liga, was secured in the middle, but the night belonged to the MBAPPE.
The 26-year-old finished his hat-trick shortly after the time, opening some space on the edge of the box and shooting beyond Ederson, as the city’s defense stood far away.
Mbappe departed a persistent spawning and Madrid’s fans admired the ease of their team’s victory, against an opponent with whom many close battles have been shared in the last decade.
Visitors pulled a goal back in the interruption time when Omar Marmoush crushed a free kick against Crossbar and Gonzalez ran the recovery at home, but offered little solace.
The city has now lost 13 games in the last 26 in all competitions and is facing Premier League Liverpool leaders next to Sunday, with a battle to end in the top four in their hands.
Madrid, on the other hand, are still in operation for three major competitions and with the MBAPPE in such an impressive form, they believe that they can win all this.
Then, the last 16 is a conflict with the opponents of the city of Atletico or German champions Bayer Leverkusen.
“We played a complete game in attack, defense, possession and transition,” said one satisfied Ancelotti.
