Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time Formula 1 world champion, is to bid farewell to Mercedes and join Ferrari for the 2025 season.

The surprise decision follows Mercedes’ announcement that Hamilton has invoked a release clause in his contract, making the season his last with the Silver Arrows.

Lewis Hamilton, whose illustrious career with Mercedes spanned an impressive 11 years, has expressed the difficulty of leaving a team that has been an important part of his life since the age of 13. “I’ve had an amazing 11 years with this team and I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved together. Mercedes has been a part of my life since I was 13 years old,” said Hamilton, reflecting on his journey with the team.

Ferrari, in response to the stunning move, officially confirmed Hamilton’s arrival on a multi-year contract, where he will partner Charles Leclerc. The 39-year-old Briton had been involved in discussions with Ferrari in 2019, making this move a realization of a previously explored possibility.

The announcement was made during a meeting at Mercedes headquarters where team principal Toto Wolff informed staff of Hamilton’s retirement at the end of the 2024 season. Lewis Hamilton’s existing contract, which originally covered the 2024 and 2025 seasons with Mercedes, contained a clause allowing him to explore alternative opportunities after just one season.

Hamilton’s decision to leave Mercedes is fueled by a desire for a new challenge and his frustration with the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The move to Ferrari not only marks a change in team dynamics for Hamilton, but the he is also set to chase an eighth world title, surpassing the legendary Michael Schumacher.

While Ferrari has faced uncertainty in recent seasons, the arrival of Lewis Hamilton is set to reinvigorate the team, promising an exciting and competitive Formula 1 season for 2025.

The world of motorsport is eagerly awaiting how this move will reshape the dynamics of Formula 1, with Hamilton, Ferrari and the fans embarking on a journey full of anticipation and excitement.
