US Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F Kennedy JR announced sweeping changes to federal public health services, including elimination of 10,000 jobs and consolidating multiple departments, Reuters reported.
Restructuring will affect organizations such as Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Disease Control and Prevention Centers (CDC) and National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Among the work cuts, 3,500 seats will be removed from the FDA, 2,400 from the CDC and 1,200 from NIH. Combined with the recent voluntary departures, these reductions will shrink the health and human services workforce (HHS) from 82,000 to 62,000 employees.
“Over time, bureaucrats such as HHS become wasteful and ineffective even when most of their staff are committed and competent civil servants,” Kennedy said. “This review will be a win-win for taxpayers and for those who serve HHS. This is the whole American public because our goal is to make America healthy again.”
The move is in line with President Donald Trump’s broader initiative to reduce federal bureaucracy, an effort also supported by billionaire Elon Musk, who is leading the ministry’s efficiency. Trump recently called on all federal services to prepare for additional job cuts, with the White House now considering the proposed plans.
While major organizations such as HHS have undergone democratic and democratic administrations, this revision is unprecedented on its scale. “This is not just an HHS reorganization. It is also a cutting of the federal workforce, which will ultimately affect government agencies,” said Larry Levitt, a KFF health policy expert.
Despite job losses, HHS said FDA inspectors and drug reviewers would not be affected. However, experts warn that cuts could cause delays in drug approvals and medical reviews. The reorganization will also consolidate various health -related offices in a new entity, the administration for healthy America, focusing on addiction, environmental health and primary care.
