Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah is set to replace Greg Barclay as president of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The Era reported on Wednesday.
Shah appeared to be a strong contender for the top job after Barclay, who has chaired the ICC since November 2020, informed the governing body’s directors during a video call on Tuesday night that he was stepping down.
Barclay made his decision after Shah expressed his desire to become ICC president while claiming to have the support of other members.
“ICC chairman Greg Barclay has confirmed to the board that he will not seek a third term and will step down when his current term ends at the end of November. Barclay was appointed as the independent chairman of the ICC in November 2020, before becoming re-elected in 2022,” said an ICC spokesperson The Era.
“The current directors are now invited to submit nominations for the next chairmanship by 27 August 2024 and if there is more than one candidate, an election will be held with the term of the new chairman commencing on 1 December 2024.”
If elected, Shah will follow in the footsteps of India’s Jagmohan Dalmiya and Sharad Pawar who have previously headed the ICC among others.
Shah claimed to have secured support from key ICC nations such as England and Australia to potentially become the next chairman of cricket’s governing body for at least a three-year term.
The 35-year-old BCCI secretary, whose current post will expire next year, will become the youngest president in ICC history.
It is worth mentioning that Shah’s appointment as ICC president comes at a time when there are doubts over India’s participation in the 2025 Champions Trophy, which will be held in Pakistan from February to March next year.
