Jamaat-e-Islami has confirmed it will hold a nationwide shutter-down strike after 12th Rabi ul Awal, which falls on August 26 this year (Geo News).
JI emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman made the announcement at a press conference in Lahore on Sunday, as the party’s sit-ins in provincial capitals over the petroleum levy entered their eighth day.
No more assurances
The most consequential part of the announcement was about negotiation, not about the strike.
Rehman said the protests would not end merely on government assurances, and that talks would no longer proceed on the basis of the government asking protesters to disperse in return for promises.
“The sit-in will end only when the government implements our demands in practical terms,” he said.
That closes the usual exit from a protest of this kind. A sit-in that ends on a commitment can be wound down in an afternoon; one that ends only on implementation cannot.
The demands and the grievances
Rehman demanded that the federal government reduce petroleum product prices. He has previously called for the petroleum levy to be abolished outright and for a cut of Rs130 a litre.
He widened the charge beyond fuel, saying the country could not progress in the presence of flour and sugar mafias, and that farmers were struggling to obtain fertiliser at affordable prices.
“Government officials are driving expensive vehicles with our money,” he said.
That last line has landed in a particular week. The prime minister has just formally recorded his displeasure with the Islamabad IGP and chief commissioner for arriving at the Independence Day parade in a horse-drawn carriage, instructing civil servants to maintain simplicity.
The arithmetic behind the anger
Petrol has risen at every review this month and stands at Rs341.59 a litre. High-speed diesel is at Rs368.29.
Diesel was cut by Rs32.63 last week — but through an arrangement in which four Karachi refineries absorbed part of their margin, not by reducing the levy. The government continues to collect around Rs114 a litre in taxes and duties on petrol and Rs100 on diesel.
Rehman has consistently made that distinction the centre of his case: the price moved, the tax did not.
What a shutter-down strike means
A successful shutter-down closes retail commerce nationwide for a day. Combined with a wheel-jam, which JI has also threatened, it stops transport as well.
The date places it in the week after Eid Milad un Nabi, a public holiday the government has declared for August 26.
