In a recent episode of the chatshow Mind Na Karna, Pakistani actress Mariyam Nafees sparked a lively debate by sharing her view on polygamy with host Ahmad Ali Butt. The conversation it started during a game segment of the show where Ahmad and Mariyam were presented with various scenarios to decide whether they were interested in something or not.
Mariyam has stood firm in her position against polygamy and stated that she opposes men having multiple wives at the same time. “If men remarry one by one, then I don’t mind. If they get married at the same time, then I don’t mind”, o Jaan-e-Jahan said the actor.
Kicking off an animated banter, Mariyam and Ahmad found themselves reacting to various statements, including one questioning whether every man should follow the example of Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik and marry three times.
The Neem The starlet delved into the complexities of marriage, highlighting two distinct approaches: marrying consecutively or simultaneously. While expressing acceptance of the former, he expressed concerns about the practicality and fairness of the latter. Ahmad invoked the religious acceptance of four marriages for men and she replied: “Let me correct that. Our religion says: “If you can do justice (to all your wives) but you will not.”
Ahmad presented an opposing view, arguing that it is indeed possible for a man to marry several wives at the same time and provide adequately for each family, seeing this as a positive aspect of polygamy.
However, Mariyam begged to differ. “You can’t keep all four wives happy because it’s not possible.” The actress stressed the importance of giving equal justice to each spouse, a principle she believes is inherently difficult to uphold in plural marriages. Although he recognized the religious allowance for polygamy, he cast doubt on women’s willingness to share their husbands willingly.
In a hypothetical scenario, she revealed that she would rather her husband leave her than enter into another marriage while still married to her. The actor said, “It is permissible in our religion and I respect it, but as a woman, I personally feel that very few women would be okay with sharing their husband. I would not do it. I would say yes, you can marry someone else, but then leave me.’
Mariyam further looked into former cricket captain Malik’s marital history, noting that he did not marry three women at once. In light of this, he argued that his string of marriages was relevant and acceptable, suggesting that he may have ended previous relationships before entering into subsequent ones.
“I’m not of the opinion that if you’re in an unhappy marriage, you should stay in that toxic environment with your kids,” she argued. “Shoeib did not have many wives at the same time. If someone wants to marry more than once like Shoaib, one at a time, I am fine with that.
