Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday that the water from India that once flows to the border would stop, days after the suspension of a basic water Treaty with Pakistan.
“India’s water was staying out, now it will flow for India,” Modi said in a speech in New Delhi. “India’s water will stop for India’s interests and use for India.”
Pakistan has warned that violation of its rivers would be considered a “act of war”.
Modi did not specifically mention Islamabad, but his speech comes after New Delhi to suspend the part of the IWT, signed in 1960, which governs water critical to Pakistan for consumption and agriculture.
New Delhi has accused Islamabad of supporting a deadly attack on tourists in Pahalaga, a mountain resort in Indian illegal occupied jam and Kashmir (Iiojk) last month, sparking a series of heated threats and diplomatic measures for Tit.
Pakistan rejects the accusations and both sides have exchanged night shots from April 24 along the LOC line (LOC), according to the Indian army.
United Nations leader Antonio Guterres said on Monday that relations between Pakistan and India had reached a “boiling point”, warning that “now is the time for maximum retention and retirement” of war.
India changed the flow of the Chenab River on Tuesday, one of the three rivers that were placed under Pakistan’s control according to the treaty now.
“We have watched changes to the river (Chenab) that are not natural at all,” said Kazim Pirzada, Punjab’s irrigation minister, in AFP.
Punjab, which borders India and the house of almost half of Pakistan’s 240 million citizens, is the country’s agricultural heart and “the majority impact will be felt in areas that have fewer alternative water routes,” Pirzada warned.
“One day the river had a normal influx and the next day it was very reduced,” Pirzada added.
In Azad Jammu and Kashmir, large quantities of water from India were released on April 26, according to the Jinnah Institute, a think tank led by a former Pakistani change minister.
“This is done so as not to use water,” Pirzada added.
Hindu-nationalist modi had already threatened to use water as a weapon in 2016 after an attack on Iiojk. “Blood and water cannot flow together,” he said at the moment.
But India is also a downstream state of China, which controls Brahmaputra’s Tibetan waters, the huge river key in the northeast of India, which then flows under Bangladesh.
