  • Indian officials refuse to change policy on Russian oil imports.
  • Russia remains India’s top oil supplier, providing 35% of imports.
  • Trump threatened 100% invoices in countries buying Russian oil.

India will continue to buy oil from Russia, despite US President Donald Trump’s threats to sanctions, two Indian government sources said, which do not wish to be identified due to the sensitivity of the issue.

“These are long -term oil contracts,” one of the sources said. “It’s not so simple to stop buying one night.”

Trump last month said in a social position of the truth that India would face additional sanctions on Russian weapons and oil purchases. On Friday, Trump told reporters that he had heard that India would no longer buy oil from Russia.

The New York Times On Saturday, he reported two anonymous senior Indian officials, saying there was no change in India’s politics, with one official saying that the government “had given no direction to oil companies” to reduce imports from Russia.

Reuters He said this week that Indian state refineries stopped buying Russian oil last week after discounts restricted in July.

“Regarding the energy supply requirements … We are looking at what is available in the markets, what is offered and also the prevailing global situation or conditions,” India Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal told reporters during a regular information on Friday.

Jaiswal added that India has a “stable and tested partnership” with Russia and that New Delhi’s relations with various countries stand in their own value and should not see from the prism of a third country.

The White House in Washington did not immediately respond to requests for comments.

Indian refiners are pulling behind the Russian crude, as discounts shrink to their lower 2022, when western sanctions were first imposed in Moscow, due to lower Russian exports and steady demand, sources earlier this week reported this week.

The State Refineries of the country – Indian Oil Corp, Hindustan Petroleum Corp, Bharat Petroleum Corp and Mangalore Petrochemical Ltd – did not ask for Russian raw last week Reuters.

The top supplier of India

On July 14, Trump threatened 100% invoices in countries that buy Russian oil unless Moscow reaches a major peace deal with Ukraine. Russia is India’s leading supplier, responsible for about 35% of India’s total supplies.

Russia continued to be the leading oil supplier in India during the first six months of 2025, representing about 35% of India’s total supplies, followed by Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

India, the third largest importer of oil in the world and the consumer, received about 1.75 million barrels daily Russian oil in January-June this year, up 1% a year ago, according to data provided by Reuters from sources.

Nayara Energy, an important buyer of Russian oil, was recently approved by the European Union, as the refinery belongs to the majority of Russian entities, including the Grand Rosneft oil.

Last month, Reuters said Nayara’s chief executive had resigned after the imposition of EU sanctions and Veteran Sergey Denisov had been appointed as CEO.

Three ships worn by Nayara Energy’s oil products have not yet unloaded their cargoes, hindered by new EU sanctions on the Russian -backed refinery, Reuters said in late last month.
