India’s Financial Crimes Combat Service has imposed a fine on the British BBC 314,510 pounds ($ 397,980) for alleged foreign exchange violations in the nation of South Asia, according to three government sources Reuters.
The Agency, the India Insurance Directorate (ED), opened an investigation into the BBC in April 2023 in accordance with the Law Management Act, two months after the tax authorities investigated at the offices of the broadcasting station in Delhi and Bombay.
The ED is conducting investigations into suspicions of violations of the Law on India Currency Management and can “expose and impose sanctions” on those who are guilty, according to its website.
The BBC, which launched a new company for Indian linguistic services in December 2023, was issued a warning to promote etiology earlier that year to fail to reduce foreign property to the company at the permissible 26%, sources said.
As a result, the broadcasting body has been imposed a fine of 314,510 pounds, along with a fine for each day from October 15, 2021 for violations.
In addition, three managers of the company have been fined 104,836 pounds for their roles in business supervision during the infringement period, sources were added.
The tax raids in February 2023 followed the release of a BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for the Gujarat state during riots in 2002. At least 1,000 people were killed in riots, most of the Muslims.
The Indian government had in 2023 rejected the documentary as “propaganda”, prevented its ventilation and also prevented the exchange of any clip through social media in the country.
Modi denied the accusations that he did not do enough to stop the riots and was exempt in 2012 after an investigation supervised by the Supreme Court.
