Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Friday slammed EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell’s statement on Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine as “bureaucratic nonsense from Brussels”.
“It has not yielded any results in finding a way of #peace in the Russia-Ukraine war,” Orban wrote on X. “If we want to end the war we need a political approach instead of a bureaucratic one.”
Borel wrote on Friday in X about Orban’s visit to the Russian capital.
“The EU’s position on Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine is reflected in several European Council conclusions,” he said.
“This position rules out formal contacts between the EU and President (Vladimir) Putin,” he said. “Therefore, the Hungarian prime minister does not represent the EU in any way.”
The statement added that Orbán’s visit to Moscow takes place exclusively in the context of relations between Hungary and Russia.
Hungary assumed the rotating presidency of the European Union for six months on Monday, taking over from Belgium.
Hungary’s EU presidency, led by Orbán, coincides with a reshuffle of EU governance following the June 6-9 European Parliament elections, in which the right made gains.
Although a dynamic legislative process is not expected, Budapest’s political vision is expected to carry a lot of weight.
There has been tension in recent years between Hungary’s government and the EU leadership over what it sees as the decline of democratic principles in the country.
Legal proceedings are underway against the country on the grounds that it violates the bloc’s legislation, and a significant part of the amount Hungary could receive from EU funds has been blocked for this reason.
Hungary has also opposed EU sanctions on Russia over the Ukraine war.
Hungary will hand over the seat to Poland on January 1.
