GENEVA:
The UN UNICEF children’s charity called on Friday for all intersections for food in war crushed gauze to open, saying that children in the territory were particularly vulnerable because they have passed without proper food for long periods.
The appeal came as the Israeli troops began to pull behind some parts of the Palestinian territory on Friday under a ceasefire agreement with Hamas, in the first phase of an initiative by US President Donald Trump to end the two -year war.
“The situation is critical, we are at risk of seeing a huge spike in the death of the child, not only neonatal but also infants, as their immune system is more compromised than ever,” said UNICEF spokesman Ricardo Pires. Children’s immunity is low because “they have not eaten properly and recently for a long time,” he said.
The United Nations is planning to increase the providing humanitarian aid to Gaza, where some areas face famine in the first 60 days of ceasefire in the enclave, the UN leading official said on Thursday. The UN Global Food Program (WFP) said they expect about 600 aid trucks enter Gaza daily.
“Under the ceasefire of fire, we will have more than 145 community distribution points, except for up to 30 bakeries and all our nutrition areas,” said Ross Smith, WFP’s emergency manager, at Reuters on Friday.
The WFP expects to start the escalation of traditions early next week, but this will depend on the withdrawal of the Israeli forces so that humanitarian safe zones can be expanded. The Israeli army has said that the UN -operated help trucks and the “approved” donors would be able to enter Gaza.
Trucks will mainly include foods, medical equipment, shelter supplies and fuel and equipment needed to repair water lines and drainage systems. Access to northern Gaza is critical, WFP said, with up to 400,000 people who have not received help for several weeks.
The Agency urged the improvement of scanning and approval of assistance to accelerate trucks. UNICEF said 50,000 children are at risk of acute malnutrition and need immediate treatment. UNICEF also aims to provide a million blankets for each child in Gaza and hopes to deliver wheelchairs and crutches, which he said had previously been blocked.
Both UNICEF and Un Palsestinian Afrose Relieck Aginach Unrwa said they have not yet received details of their roles during a ceasefire. UNRWA, which is forbidden to operate in Israel, urged Israeli authorities to allow him to receive 6,000 trucks in Gaza, including several foods to supply the population for three months, from Jordan and Egypt.
