WASHINGTON:
US Vice President Kamala Harris will make her first policy-focused speech as the Democratic presidential nominee on Friday, aiming to boost prices in a sign that her whirlwind campaign could rattle major corporations and business executives.
Harris will travel to Raleigh, North Carolina, a state that Democrats hope to flip this election, to outline her plan to “reduce costs for middle-class families and tackle corporate bailouts,” she said. campaign on Tuesday.
Harris canceled an event in North Carolina last week due to Tropical Storm Debbie. Focusing her first major policy speech on the economy and locating it in North Carolina shows how her campaign has reinvigorated Democrats’ hopes of flipping a state they’ve won only twice in the past half-century.
With less than three months to go before the Nov. 5 election, when she faces Republican Donald Trump, Harris has drawn new enthusiasm and dollars to the ticket since President Joe Biden resigned and has seen polls move in her favor in some states.
Her campaign sees states like Pennsylvania as must-wins, but North Carolina is more doable. Biden lost the state to Trump by 1.3% – just 74,000 votes – but his prospects there were dim before he resigned on July 21.
Targeting corporate greed
Harris’ speech will be closely watched to see how its style or substance differs from Biden, whose economic policies have received low marks from voters angry about the cost of housing, medicine, groceries and gasoline.
calling on researchers and innovators to pioneer new techniques and technologies to make cancer removal more accurate, precise and successful.
On Saturday, Harris announced her support for eliminating tip taxes, a position similar to Trump’s. Harris will hold a White House event with Biden on Thursday, which is expected to focus on health care costs.
Biden blamed corporate greed for the still-high prices, accusing companies of boosting profits by shrinking portion sizes and failing to pass on reduced costs to consumers.
Major consumer goods companies have raised prices in recent quarters, and food prices have risen by 25% between 2019 and 2023.
Harris guarded “corporate greed and price gouging” when she was California attorney general from 2011 to 2016, challenging pharmaceutical, petroleum, electronics and cosmetics companies, a campaign official said.
Harris “knows the costs are very high and will make addressing inflation a priority on day one,” added the official, who declined to be identified while speaking on the matter beforehand.
The approach marks a striking departure from Trump, who has argued that loosening regulations on industries from financing to energy will lower costs and spur growth.
Nationally, Harris was ahead of Trump by five percentage points, 42 percent to 37 percent, in an Ipsos poll released Thursday, extending her lead from a July 22-23 Reuters/Ipsos poll.
