- The provinces have said to ensure cheap sugar availability.
- The Council of Ministers approves the introduction of 500,000 tonnes.
- PSMA, Fawad Hassan, on the other hand, the introduction decision.
The federal government and the sugar industry have reached an agreement, setting the price of the former kilometer of sugar in RS165 per kilogram, appeared on Monday.
The decision comes amid growing retail prices, which have climbed to both high levels and RS200 per kilo in various parts of the country, including karachi and Peshawar.
According to the Ministry of National Food Security, provincial governments have been directed to ensure sugar availability for consumers at the newly established price.
“The provinces must take action to ensure that the public has access to affordable sugar,” the ministry said in a statement earlier this month.
Despite this agreement, sugar prices in open markets continue to increase. In retail stores across the country, sugar is sold at prices exceeding the new percentage of former kilometer, reflecting ongoing volatility and short -term pressure.
To tackle the situation, the Federal Council of Ministers approved earlier the introduction of 500,000 tonnes of sugar through the public sector. The Ministry of National Food Safety has confirmed that the implementation of the project is already ongoing.
The ministry has said that the move is part of a more effective and transparent strategy aimed at correcting the market, as opposed to previous years’ policies that allegedly allowed artificial deficiencies for subsidies.
“This introduction is a genuine corrective step and not a politically guided measure,” the ministry said. He acknowledged that the previous decision permitted in sugar exports was made when the domestic stocks were abundant, but these conditions have changed due to rising prices.
The criticism comes from many quarters. The Pakistani Union Sugar Mills (PSMA) has pushed behind the government’s introduction decision, arguing that existing stocks are sufficient to meet national demand until at least November.
Fawad Hassan Fawad, a senior leader of PML-N and closure to Nawaz Sharif, also expressed skepticism. He challenged the timetable of the import and asked who stood by the move, indirectly criticizing the government’s economic directors for policy inconsistencies.
