The leading G7 funding leaders gathered in Canada on Tuesday, in talks combined with financial concerns coming from US President Donald Trump invoices, while concerns about Ukraine remain in the spotlight.
Thursday’s leaders will discuss global economic conditions, with participants looking for a common position in Ukraine, while issues such as financial crime and non -purchase practices are also on the agenda.
The talks come amid an uncertain approach between the G7 Republics towards the War in Ukraine – after Russia’s invasion in 2022 – since Trump returned to the presidency this year.
Ukrainian Finance Minister Sergii Marchenko is also present at the meeting of the Group of Seven Ministers of Finance and Governors of the Central Bank in the western province of Alberta, Canada and will address reporters on Tuesday.
As soon as it is widely integrated, G7 – Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States – have been hit by Trump, who arrived in Russia and slapped invoices to both allies and competitors.
Economists warn that invoices could supply inflation and weigh the growth and the impact of US trade policy will downgrade over Finance Minister Scott Bessent’s commitments.
While Trump’s contributions are not officially on the agenda, a Canadian official told reporters that “trade and tariffs will be incorporated into the debate on the global economy”.
The employee expressed hope for the G7 to confirm the support for a well -operated commercial and investment system.
A US Treasury spokesman, meanwhile, said that Bessent is seeking to grab “back on the basics and focused on addressing imbalances and non -purchase practices”, including non -G7 countries.
G7 members could find more consensus in China. A source informed of the US involvement expects China’s excessive industrial capacity to be discussed, with members sharing concerns about the issue.
A Japanese official told AFP that his finance minister is planning a meeting with Bessent, seeking to address issues such as foreign currency.
But today there is no bilateral meeting scheduled between Bessent and the Canadian counterpart of Francois-Philippe Champagne.
While grouping is discussing policies and solutions on issues such as trade, security and climate change, analysts warned the unpredictable this time in the midst of internal tensions.
Banff, Alberta Gathering, will be a “test or signal” of G7’s ability to agree on a final statement, “a French finance ministry official said on Tuesday.
Although the presidency of Canada hopes to issue a statement, this result must reflect “a common understanding of the global financial situation and the common goals in addressing the challenges described in the statement,” the official said.
“We will not be able to accept the language that is completely weakened.” AFP
