MARRAKECH, MOROCCO,:
Burnley striker Lyle Foster scored on 79 minutes as South Africa beat Angola 2-1 in Marrakech on Monday, winning their Africa Cup of Nations opener for the first time in 21 years.
Since beating Benin in the 2004 tournament, Bafana Bafana have drawn twice and lost four times on their debut in different editions of Africa’s premier football tournament.
The opening match of Group B had three distinct phases. South Africa got off to an impressive start and Oswin Appollis scored on 21 minutes in front of a small home crowd of nearly 42,000.
Angola controlled the remainder of the first half and Shaw equalised. South Africa then bounced back to be the stronger team in the second half and Foster struck to secure maximum points.
Egypt, captained by Mohamed Salah, meet Zimbabwe later in the southern coastal city of Agadir in the same leg.
South Africa attacked often in the opening stages, but their goalkeeper Ronwen Williams had to react quickly on 15 minutes to save a shot from fellow captain Freddy Ribeiro.
Apollos gave Bafana Bafana the lead six minutes later, winning possession from a Khuliso Mudau cross and beating 39-year-old goalkeeper Hugo Marques with a low shot into the corner.
Williams helped again as the game reached the half-hour mark, making a stunning save from Jelson Dala’s header.
Angola were on top and it was no surprise when Shaw — one of many Angolan footballers who use a nickname — equalized after 35 minutes.
Tempers flare
Siyabonga Ngezana was lucky to escape a yellow card after fouling Dala, but indiscipline proved costly on a cold evening in central Morocco.
The resulting free-kick fell low in the South African goal and Shaw connected with the ball to drive it into the corner.
Tempers flared as the half progressed and the Sudanese referee booked Angola’s Carneiro, then South Africa’s Aubrey Modiba and Sphephelo Sithole.
As the teams walked off the pitch at half-time, France’s Patrice Bommel would have been the happier manager with Angola unlucky not to be ahead.
South Africa thought they had regained the lead six minutes into the second half when substitute Tshepang Moremi, for the ineffective Mohau Nkota, headed a low shot past Marques and into the net.
But Bafana’s celebrations were cut short when a VAR review showed Foster — the only South African from Europe’s top five in the squad — was marginally offside.
South Africa were pushing for a second goal and centre-back Mbekezeli Mbokazi temporarily relinquished his defensive duties to beat Marques with a long drive only to see it curl in off the crossbar.
On the back foot for much of the first half, South Africa were now the aggressors, constantly pushing forward in search of a lead.
A quick Bafana counter-attack saw Moremi beat a defender and then push the ball back into the path of Foster, who missed a good chance by firing over.
But Foster redeemed himself with 11 minutes of normal time remaining after a shot from the edge of the box gave Marques no chance and put South Africa back in front.
An interception of a pass from Angola and two flawless passes saw the striker score his fourth goal in six games.
