Floods flooding on the southeastern coast of Australia have killed three people and cut the cities, isolating tens of thousands of residents, as officials warned that more thunderstorms were expected over the next 24 hours.
The large floods hit several rural cities in the Hunter and Mid North Coast areas of New South Wales, Australia’s most densely populated state, with most of the middle northern coast area facing further heavy rainfall by Thursday.
Police said the body of a 63 -year -old man was found in a flooded house near Taree, over 300 km (186 miles) north of Sydney, while another body believed to have been a missing age in the 30’s had been discovered in the flood waters.
The body of a 60 -year -old woman was also found in her vehicle west of Coffs Harbor, police said. The woman had been warned of driving through the flood by an officer late on Wednesday before being trapped and seeking help. Emergency services were unable to locate it in time.
Police said they were still looking for a missing person.
“This natural disaster was awesome for this community,” said New South Wales Prime Minister Chris Minns during briefing the media.
“There are 140 flood warnings, 50,000 people are in the area where they were asked to prepare to be evacuated and isolated and there were 9,500 properties in the immediate neighborhood. So we are away from the forest here.”
More than 100 schools were closed on Thursday, with thousands of real estate without power.
The Cundletown on the middle northern coast has been completely cut off by floods, said Nicole Sammut, a nurse who cares for 67 elderly residents in an elderly care home, also used as an emergency shelter.
“I came to work on Tuesday and I didn’t leave,” Sammut told Reuters.
“We are on a hill. But behind us is all the water. We are isolated. I have never seen this tall water.”
The manning river in the nearby Taree had exceeded a 100 -year -old flood record, the emergency authorities said.
Sherinah Peck was evacuated at 2am on Wednesday from her farmhouse on the river, but her possessions swept her, with some furniture later washed on the coast.
As she was looking for Thursday Bar Beach on Thursday, she was pushed with debris and dead and lost the animals for a precious bike belonging to her late mother, Peck was hit by a cow and injured, he said.
“The cow was distressed – a wave came. I had to stir the sand,” he told Reuters.
More intense rain
A slow movement of coastal thresholds has thrown about four months of rain over the last two days, cutting entire cities and linking residents to the roofs and the second floors of their homes, as rescuers are struggling to access the area by boat or air.
Minns apologized to people who had to wait several hours for rescue crews, but the assured efforts had accelerated with 2,500 emergency personnel developed.
About 590 flood rescues had taken place, dozens of helicopters, New South Wales police said. Helicopters also direct more boat rescues.
“There have been some important rescues, but unfortunately we have lost a number of lives,” Assistant Commissioner David Waddell said at a press conference.
Australia’s meteorology office predicts that some areas could receive up to 200 mm (8 inches) of rain until Friday, activating life -threatening life before it is expected to be weakened and located south to Sydney.
