London: United Kingdom leader Keir Starmer said Sunday that “Europe must make heavy elevation” to secure peace in Ukraine, as he said many countries were ready to help defend any truce.
The British prime minister again called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to violate any ceasefire, following talks with more than twelve leaders in central London.
“Europe must make the heavy elevation, but support peace in our continent and succeed, this effort must have strong US support,” Starmer told reporters after the meeting.
UK Prime Minister and French President Emmanuel Macron said they are ready to develop British and French troops in Ukraine to help maintain peace if an agreement is signed to end the war.
The couple are top attempts to gather a group of countries that will contribute in different ways to the effort, which is referred to as a “coalition of willing”.
“Some countries have said today that they want to participate in the plan we are developing,” Starmer said, without nameing nations.
“I will let them make their own statements about how they want to make this contribution,” he added.
Starmer said that those who willing “will intensify planning now with real urgency”.
“Not every nation will feel able to contribute, but that cannot mean we are sitting,” he added.
US President Donald Trump has not yet been committed to any security guarantees, but Starmer added that the discussions were on the basis of “they would support us”.
“I would not take this step down this path if I didn’t think it was something that would give a positive effect on ensuring the movement, Ukraine, Europe, the United Kingdom and the US,” he added.
Starmer also said America was not a “unreliable ally”.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni appeared to downgrade Italy to contribute to peacekeepers, saying that “the presence of Italian troops in Ukraine at this stage was never on the agenda”.
“I see this as a solution that is in danger of being very complicated and perhaps less decisive than others,” he said.
Starmer also announced an agreement that allows Ukraine to use £ 1.6 billion ($ 2 billion) of UK export funding to buy more than 5,000 air defense missiles.
