Elizabeth Taylor struggled with alcohol and drugs after her marriage to Senator John Warner ended in 1982.
In his last episode BBC documentary Elizabeth Taylor: Rebel Superstarremembered her loved ones who saw her suffer from addiction.
“She had physical ailments, particularly bad back problems, for which the use of painkillers was a legitimate solution,” explained her son Christopher Wilding. “When she was little, we had all these miracle drugs and you took a pill. That was her approach – better to live through science.”
He went on to say that those close to her knew she “abused alcohol and painkillers, including injectables.” Her loved ones then decided to do an intervention for the icon.
He continued: “We were going to talk to her, but things got to the point where it was decided she needed an intervention. We just wanted her to get help. Close family members jumped in and boy, was it difficult.”
“The family’s intervention stopped me so dead in my tracks. It leaves you completely speechless, and it’s so honest and so loving that you know it must be agony for them. We were all petrified. She was an awesome woman,” Wilding recalled.
His mother had a positive response to the intervention and agreed to go to a rehabilitation clinic.
In a recording, she said: “It was like being slapped in the face with reality. And I thought, ‘Oh my God, I thought I was a good mother.’ How did I allow myself to do this to the people I love the most. the world?” “
In rehab, the actress had to share a room with someone and do chores, things she had never done in her adult life, according to her son. He also received treatment.
Speaking about her time in rehab, Elizabeth Taylor said, “I really felt for the first time in my life like I wasn’t being taken advantage of. I was being accepted for myself. I was forced to look at the honest truth of who I was.”
